Orla Boylan celebrated an eagerly awaited homecoming concert in candlelit Holmpatrick Church, attended by a capacity crowd. Orla, beautifully accompanied by Mairéad Hurley, had last held a recital in Skerries 20 years ago – hence the title of the evening.
The audience was treated to a selection of songs that hold a special place in Orla’s heart and they really appreciated it, Orla’s voice soaring to fill the church. The programme included early songs by Alban Berg, Barber’s Hermit Songs and Wagner’s beautiful Wesendonck Lieder. To finish, Orla treated the rapt crowd to some favourite operatic arias.
At the conclusion of the concert, Ernestine Woelger of Skerries Soundwaves presented Orla with a beautiful sea-glass pendant by Ed Cooke. Ernestine explained that Orla had waived her fee and that the net proceeds of the concert were going into a new fund which would be open to music related applications from Skerries groups or individuals. She thanked Orla and said her generosity would benefit the community of Skerries.
Orla said that Skerries was her home and she just loved to come back here after being away and nest and relax. She remarked that she had never given a recital in front of an audience where she knew each and every face and that it had been a very special night for her.
